South Dakota is located in the northern plains of the United States. South Dakota is
bordered on the north by North
Dakota, on the east by Minnesota
and Iowa, to the south by Nebraska,
and on the west by Montana
and Wyoming.
South
Dakota was once part of the Dakota Territory. The name Dakota is
derived from the name of the Native American Lakota Tribes that
lived in the area at the time of contact. South Dakota became a
state on November 2, 1889.
South Dakota has an area of just over 77,000 square miles and a
population exceeding 800,000 giving the state one of the lowest
population densities in the US. Much of South Dakotas population
is concentrated in east of the Missouri River which bisects the
state.
