Mississippi Hotels Mississippi is both a Southern state and a Gulf Coast state. Mississippi is bordered on the west by Louisiana and Arkansas, on the north by Tennessee, and on the east by Alabama. In its early Euro-American history Mississippi has been claimed by the Spanish, the French and the British. In its Confederacy period, Mississippi was the scene of several significant battles between the Union and the South. One of the most significant battles of the Civil War occurred at Vicksburg. The siege of Vicksburg is considered by many historians one of the battles that signaled the turning point of the Civil War. The legacy of this series of battles is memorialized at the Vicksburg National Military Park and draws thousands of visitors each year. Another attraction that draws many visitors to Mississippi is the birthplace of Elvis Presley. Even several decades after his passing, Elvis Presley's birthplace still attracts thousands of visitors to Tupelo Mississippi. Gambling has become an important economic resource for the State of Mississippi. Las Vegas style casinos are concentrated in three areas of Mississippi. Along the Gulf Coast there are dozens of casinos in Gulfport, Biloxi and other cities. There are several casinos in the Vicksburg area. The other major concentration of casinos in Mississippi is in the Robinsonville-Tunica area just south of Memphis Tennessee.
