California has a very diverse geography that
ranges from places like the Mojave
Desert to the Sierra Nevada range on the
states eastern border, to the coastal
Redwoods in Northern California. Much of
California is temperate the year round
making it popular with travelers and for
those who locate here.
California has principal five geographic regions
that can be further divided into sub-regions
based on local variations. For example
there is the Coastal region that encompasses
all of the California coastline. The
California coast can further be
subdivided a northern coast (roughly the
area around Crescent City to the Oregon
Coast), which resembles the coast of
Oregon, the north central coast (from
south of Crescent City to the Bay area),
the central coast (from just north of
Monterey Bay to Morro Bay) and the 
southern coast (from Malibu to the
Mexican border).
Another geographic region that is
difficult to characterize because of its
diversity are the Desert areas. Some of
the deserts in California exemplify what
most people think of by the word desert. California has four
National Parks that are deserts, Death
Valley National Park, Joshua
Tree National Park, Manzanar National
Historic Site and Mojave National
Preserve. California State Parks that
are deserts include thirteen different
places located throughout the interior
of the state.
Other areas in California that are
significant are based in part on
geographical proximity and in part
culture. Orange County, the Bay Area and
San Diego County are examples of
cultural-geographical areas. Within the
Bay Area is Silicon Valley which is
defined geographically but reflects
technological industrialization and a
high-tech culture.
Agriculture is one of California's
largest industries and California has several major
agricultural areas. The Central Valley,
or just the Valley is located between
the Coastal Mountains and the Sierra
Nevada and runs from the northern part
of Southern California to Northern
California for length of about 450 miles
and is about 45 to 65  miles wide.
Another significant agricultural area in
California is the Imperial Valley. This
area is centered around El Centro
California in Imperial County.
Another type of agricultural area in
California that has gained considerable fame
in recent years are the wine
regions. The most famous of these are in
the Napa and Sonoma counties of northern
California. The most productive grape
growing area is in the Central Valley
where large fields are dedicated to raisin
crops, wine and juice grapes. Wine regions are
found throughout California and one of
the most notable is around the Temecula
area.
California also has
 notable industrial
and commercial areas. The Inland Empire
area is located east of Los Angeles and
is centered around Riverside and San
Bernardino. The Inland Empire is a major
transportation hub and manufacturing
area. A unique type of manufacturing hub
is Silicon Valley. This area is located
in what is called the South Bay. This high-tech products
and services area is in part based on
its proximity to the
higher education institutions found in
the Bay Area such as ,
and others.
California is also characterized by its
many wilderness areas such
as Yosemite National Park and its famous
forests such as the Mendocino National
Forest, Redwood National Park and Cleveland
National Forest.
California also has iconic cities such
as Hollywood, San Francisco, Los
Angeles, San Diego and many others.
These are all world class destinations
as both tourist and business
attractions.
Even if you are traveling to California
on business, you might want visit some
of the places that California is famous
or not so famous for. Sometimes you will
have to make a decision about which
place you want to visit first given the type
of place you want to visit. For example,
suppose you want to visit wineries. The
oldest and most notable wineries are
located in and around the Sonoma and
Napa Valleys. But California has over
425 thousand acres devoted to wine and
grape production distributed throughout
the state. The Santa Ynez valley, near
Santa Barbara and Oxnard is also when
known as a wine producing region. The
region around Temecula is also known as
a wine producing area.
