Also known as the Grand Canyon State, Arizona, as of 2008 had a population of over 6,250,000. Arizona is the the sixth largest state in the US with an area of 113,998 square miles.  While Arizona is usually considered a desert state more than one quarter of Arizona is covered in forest. This is due the elevation effect common throughout southwestern North America. At higher elevations the environment becomes relatively more mesic than the lower lying desert basins.
