Sometimes the erosion occurs
beneath the surface in sheets or exfoliates the surface of the sandstone. In
certain parts of Petroglyph Canyon it seems like conditions might always be
extreme because of their orientation, mostly north-south, in a confined narrow
area. One notices the wind blowing through these areas, the heat reflected from
the rocks is always more extreme in the narrow parts of this canyon.
Those kind of extremes are likely to result in such processes that created these
unusual exfoliation patterns. Petroglyphs which appear to be broken off by this
process are common.
