Utah is
located in the Mountain West part of the
United States. Utah has a geographical
diversity ranging from deserts to high
mountain peaks in the Wasatch Mountains
and the Rocky Mountains. This diversity is
the setting for a number of the most
spectacular national parks in the United
States. Utah is bordered by Nevada
on the west, Idaho
and Wyoming
on the north, Colorado
to the east and Arizona
on the south.
Utah was admitted as a state on January 4,
1896. It derives its name from Native
American groups collectively known as the
Utes. Utah has been inhabited by Native
American groups for at least 10-12,000
years. Utah was first extensively
described by Father Escalante in 1776 as
they were looking for a route between Santa
Fe New Mexico and Monterey
California.
In the middle of the 19th century Utah was
settled by pioneer groups belonging to the
Church of Latter Day Saints, the Mormons,
led by Brigham Young. When Brigham Young
and his followers first arrived in what
was to become Utah, on July 24, 1847, the
state was part of Mexican territory. This
changed with the Mexican-American war and
Utah became a US Territory on March 10,
1850.
The climate of Utah is diverse ranging
from the low elevation deserts in the
western part of the state that belong to
the Great
Basin to the high mountain
peaks in the eastern part of Utah. The
western slope of the Wasatch Range which
can receive up to 500 inches of rain
produces numerous streams that water this
area of the state.
The largest city in Utah is Salt
Lake City and St
George Utah in the southern
part of the state is one of the fastest
growing metropolitan areas in the United
States. The population of Utah stood at
over 2.5 million in 2005.
Utah is dotted with numerous and
spectacular parks that draw many visitors
each year. Among these are Zion
Canyon National Park, Bryce
Canyon and Arches National Park.
The tourism industry in Utah is very
successful and provides lodging and
accommodations for travelers throughout
the state. Hotel rooms are available in
every part of the state from hotels
and motels in Moab Utah in
the southeast part of the state to hotels
in Provo Utah in the
northwest part of the state.
