The
Saguaro Cactus is the signature plant of the Sonoran Desert. Generally living
at or below altitudes of 3500 FASL, the Sagauro Cactus can live for up to 200
years and grow to a height of 30 to 35 feet. The body of the cactus can be 18
to 24 inches thick and expands as it absorbs infrequent desert rain water.
The Saguaro is a plant well adapated to the desert. It has a hard thick, waxy
skin which inhibits the loss of water. Its accordion-like ridged surface
expands when the plant is exposed to the often brief desert rainfalls.
The rows of up to 2 inch spines along the ridged vanes serve to discourage
casual grazers that would prefer to dine on the soft moist flesh of the
Saguaro.
Saguaros are frequently abundant where they are found and create forests with
their large numbers. They flower in the spring and produce a creamy yellowish
white flower which in turn yield a pulpy fruit and seeds.
