New
York is strategically located in the
center of the Northeastern United
States. New York is bordered on the
north by Canada and Lakes Ontario and
Erie, on the east by Vermont,

The
colonization of New York began in 1609
when Henry Hudson claimed the region for
the Dutch. The settlement of New
Amsterdam was renamed New York when the
British annexed the Dutch Colony in
1664. New York established itself as an
independent state on July 9, 1776. New
York became one of the thirteen original
colonies that formed the United States
when it ratified the constitution on
July 26, 1788.
While the lower Hudson Valley is characterized by highly urbanized environments such as New York City most of the state is characterized by forests, lakes and mountains. New York has the largest state park in the US, Adirondack State Park which is roughly the size of Vermont with 6.1 million acres. This makes Adirondack State Park larger than Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier and Yellowstone National Park combined. Adirondack State Park has over 3,000 lakes and ponds, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams and over 2,000 miles of hiking trails .A premier natural wonder Niagara Falls straddles New York and Ontario Canada. The Falls carry the greatest volume of water over a fall in North America. As such there have many dare-devils who have gone over the Falls drawn by the challenge. Niagara Falls is also known as a place where couples spend their honeymoon. New York offers varied travel experiences for visitors from New York City, one of the nations top destinations, to the Adirondacks and Niagara Falls. New York City consists of five boroughs that were consolidated in 1898 to form the present political entity. |
