New England New England is so named because the first settlers to establish permanent settlements in the region were from England and remained English colonies until the American Revolution in 1776. The name was officially adopted in 1620. New England is located in the far Northeast part of the US. It consists of the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Colonized by English Pilgrims who fled religious persecution in Britain almost 400 years ago, New England was the site of much of the focus of Americas independence for British rule. New England has a great diversity in geography and economy. New England has 2 of the 10 poorest cities in the United States, Providence Rhode Island and Hartford Connecticut. It also has some of the wealthiest cities in the United States, Such as Greenwich and Stamford Connecticut. |
