The first European settlers came to Ft Collins during the Pike's Pike Gold rush of 1858 and established a settlement at the head of Ft Collins Canyon. In 1860, the first schoolhouse in Colorado was built in Ft Collins. Ft Collins was incorporated in 1871 as 'Ft Collins City'. In 1874, Ft Collins became the home of the University of Colorado. In 1882, the first graduating class consisted of six students. In 1967, voters approved both a tax for the purchase of land in order to preserve it and repleaed the 60-year old anti-saloon law. The estimated population in 2003 was 103,216 - the growth in Ft Collins being limited. Ft Collins comprises 25.37 square miles.
