The first European settlers came to Boulder during the Pike's Pike Gold rush of 1858 and established a settlement at the head of Boulder Canyon. In 1860, the first schoolhouse in Colorado was built in Boulder. Boulder was incorporated in 1871 as 'Boulder City'. In 1874, Boulder became the home of the University of Colorado. In 1967, voters approved both a tax for the purchase of land in order to preserve it and repleaed the 60-year old anti-saloon law. The estimated population in 2003 was 103,216.
