Aurora was originally named 'Fletcher' after its founder Donald Fletcher when it was founded in 1871. It changed its name in 1907 to Aurora.

Aurora has been the home to military facilities. Currently Aurora is a leader in medical facilities, treatment and research centers. In 1921 the Fitzsimons Army Hospital was opened. Today, after a long and successful history, Fitzsimons is a model for community redevelopment and serves as an anchor Aurora's medical science industry.
