The Valley Of Fire

One of the most interesting images at Atl Atl Rock is the 'ladder'. Again whether or not the authors intended for this to be a ladder is unknowable, but if it looks like a ladder, we'll call it that just to give it a name.

The Anasazi are known to have used ladders in their houses. It would have been practical for them to have used a ladder to get up high enough to make these images. The placement of the images at Atl Atl Rock is about 12 meters above the desert surface on a relatively sheer cliff.

Of the many ways that we can think of to get to this spot the ladder seems like the easiest. This would of course be a rope ladder.

Elsie Parsons in Pueblo Indian Religion, writes of the Zuni as being 'The people of the rainbow' and that idea was represented by a ladder. Whether or not there is such a connection here no will ever know. But the more we know about the people who are likely to have lived in the immediate area, the closer to understanding we get.
